MRI and ultrasound prices in Egypt: what a quote includes and what to ask before you book

We found no official, dated price list for scans, so this page gives no figures. It gives what a scan quote can contain, five questions to ask the centre before you book, and the official pages to check in Egypt.

How much does an MRI or ultrasound cost in Egypt? We found no official, dated price list for scans, so this page gives no figure. A quote can only be compared with another if both cover the same things, so ask for the price in writing and ask five questions about what it includes before you book.

Which scan you need is for your doctor to decide. This page is about the price you are quoted: whether it is for that scan, and what it covers.

In short:

  • Ask the centre for the price in writing, with the scan and the body area named as on your doctor’s request.
  • Ask what the price includes: contrast, if it is used, the radiologist’s written report, and the images.
  • If an insurer or your employer may pay, ask what is left for you before you book, not at the counter.

How much does an MRI cost in Egypt?

There is no figure to give you here. We looked for an official, dated price list for scans in Egypt and found none to quote.

RadiologyInfo.org, a patient site whose sponsors include the Radiological Society of North America and the American College of Radiology, says an MRI typically costs more than other imaging exams, and that it does not provide cost information (page reviewed 15 June 2026). For ultrasound it says costs may vary by geographic region, and to ask your doctor, the facility or your insurer about fees (page reviewed 23 September 2024).

A figure from a friend or a listing page may be out of date or cover different things. Use it to prepare questions, not as the price.

What can be inside the number on a scan quote?

Quotes can only be compared if they cover the same things. The table cites a source wherever one says something.

On the quoteWhat to find outWhat the sources say
The scan and the areaDoes the name on the quote match your doctor’s request? Is “abdomen and pelvis” one scan or two?An MRI typically costs more than other imaging exams (RadiologyInfo, reviewed 15 June 2026). Nothing read for this page says how areas are priced.
ContrastIf it is used, is it in the price? Whether contrast is used is for your doctor to decide, not a price question.RadiologyInfo: some MRI exams use contrast material, and your doctor will carefully assess your kidney function before considering a contrast injection (reviewed 15 June 2026). NHS: you may be given an injection with a contrast medium (dye) (reviewed 11 September 2025).
The report and the imagesIs the radiologist’s written report in the price, and on what day is it ready? Are the images included, on a disc or as a file?A radiologist reviews the images and sends a report to the doctor who ordered the exam (RadiologyInfo, reviewed 15 June 2026). In the UK, MRI results usually take 1 to 2 weeks (NHS, reviewed 11 September 2025). In Egypt, ask the centre for a day.
The slotDoes a different day or time change the price? Is another area, or a repeat on the day, extra? No source read for this page covers it: a question, not a rule.
Who paysIf an insurer or your employer may pay, what do you pay at the counter? The Universal Health Insurance Authority (UHIA) FAQ, which carries no date, says some limited fees and contributions will be collected when the service is received, including for imaging, and that people with chronic diseases and cancer are exempt from them (read 23 October 2026).

Sources read on 23 October 2026. None of this is a promise about any centre, price or case.

What should I ask before I book a scan? Five questions

Put these to the centre and write the answers down. Cost is one of the five questions in five questions to ask before your next appointment; the doctor who requested the scan is the best first person to ask what it involves.

  1. What exactly is this price for? The scan and the area, as named on my doctor’s request.
  2. Is contrast included, if it is used?
  3. Do I get the radiologist’s written report and the images, and when?
  4. What would change the price on the day? A different slot, another area, a repeat.
  5. What do I pay myself, if my insurer or employer is involved?

Ask for the answers in writing, even as a message you can keep. A quote that names the scan, the area and what is included is the only kind you can compare.

How much is an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis, or an echo?

We found no official, dated price for either, so there is no figure here, and the five questions apply as they are. RadiologyInfo says ultrasound uses sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body (reviewed 23 September 2024). Three more points:

  • “Abdomen and pelvis” names an area, or two. Ask whether the quote covers both.
  • Preparation. Ask the centre when you book, and follow what your doctor and the centre tell you. This page gives no preparation instructions.
  • “Echo”. An echocardiogram is a scan of the heart that uses sound waves, and the standard one takes about 30 to 40 minutes, says the NHS (reviewed 26 February 2026). Ask for the test’s full name on the quote.

How much does an X-ray cost in Egypt?

We found no official, dated price for an X-ray either, so there is no figure. The same questions apply: what the price is for, what is included, what could change it, and what you pay if someone else is paying.

Who pays for a scan in Egypt?

Your route into care shapes the bill, and Public, insured or private? A patient’s map of healthcare in Egypt sets the routes side by side. If you are covered by the Health Insurance Organization, ask your branch how a scan request is handled. Under Universal Health Insurance, in the governorates where it applies, the UHIA FAQ (undated) says some limited fees and contributions will be collected for imaging, with an exemption for people with chronic diseases and cancer (read 23 October 2026). Rules change, so confirm with your insurer.

Are radiology centres licensed in Egypt?

The Ministry of Health and Population’s page for its General Administration of Radiology lists, among the tasks of its Executive Office for Protection from Radiation Hazard, licences for government and private radiology departments and centres (read 23 October 2026; the page is undated). The ministry’s list of licensing services also includes radiology centres. We found no page that explains how a patient can check a centre’s licence, but you can ask the centre.

Why can two quotes for one scan not be compared?

Because they may cover different things. An invented illustration, not a real case: someone has a doctor’s request for an MRI of one joint. Centre A gives a number by phone. Centre B sends a message naming the scan and the area, and saying whether contrast, the report and the images are included. The two numbers cannot be compared, so the person puts the same five questions to Centre A, sets both sets of answers on one page and shows it to the doctor who made the request. The example contains no price and recommends no centre.

Frequently asked questions

How much is an MRI in Egypt?

This page gives no figure: we found no official, dated price list for scans to quote. Ask the centre for the price in writing and ask what it includes.

How much is an abdomen and pelvis ultrasound in Egypt?

No figure here either. Ask whether the quote covers the abdomen and the pelvis together.

What does an echo or an X-ray cost in Egypt?

No figure for either. Ask for the full name of the test on the quote, and what is included.

Does the price include the report?

Ask. A radiologist sends a report to the doctor who ordered the exam, according to RadiologyInfo, but we found no source saying the report is always in the price.

Does insurance pay for an MRI or an ultrasound?

Only your insurer can say, because it depends on your scheme and your doctor’s request. The UHIA FAQ (undated) says some limited fees and contributions will be collected for imaging under Universal Health Insurance.

Can I ask the centre for the price in writing?

You can ask. A written quote naming the scan, the area and what is included is the easiest to compare.
